Based on my research on DevOps, iam sharing my thoughts about the reality of a DevOps job now-a-days. 1) First, people think coding is not required for DevOps....... It was 4 years back but not now. 2) 3-4 years back Shell Scripting or Python Scripting was not that mandatory for DevOps... Good knowledge on DevOps tools (GIT, Jenkins, Docker, Ansible, Terraform) was enough, because in most of the companies automation part (Shell Scripting or Python Scripting ) was taken care by Senior DevOps engineers / Developers. So back then companies use to hire employees even if they do not had a coding / scripting knowledge. 3) But from last few years what happened is, large number of people started learning DevOps because they thought No Coding/Scripting is required and also because of Attractive/High Packages. 4) As i told in 2nd point, some 3-4 years back in companies Developers or Senior DevOps engineer's use to take care of coding/automation part (Shell Scripting or Python Scripting )......, but now due to a high demand in market large number of people started learning DevOps and even many Developers like Java, Python...etc., are moving into DevOps field due to high demand & high packages. 5) Because of the high demand in market, most of the companies are expecting basic level of Shell Scripting or Python Scripting knowledge from a Junior DevOps engineer (not all companies but majorly) and Good level of Scripting knowledge forom a Senior DevOps engineer's. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Why most of the people are not receiving calls related to DevOps now-a-days ? There are 2 reasons for this: - 1) First, Some People with High DevOps Skills like they have Good knowledge on Shell Scripting or Python Scripting, Good knowledge on Multiple DevOps tools and Multiple Services on Cloud. 2) Second, Large number of people having Basic to Intermediate level of knowledge on DevOps tools, and Not have much knowledge on cloud services, and No knowledge / Basic knowledge on Shell Scripting or Python Scripting. -- So due to these reasons, those who have "Basic to Intermediate level of knowledge" on DevOps course are getting some-what less interview calls. -- And those who have High knowledge on DevOps and have more than 5+years of experience…., they are getting many interview calls. -- Not only DevOps Skills but experience is also playing a big role here because working as a DevOps engineer should have Good commination skills, interactive skills, quick decision making….etc., So, employees with more carrier experience is an advantage for them to get more interview calls. - So, the demand in the market for DevOps is increased due to these reasons. - If you want to learn DevOps in-depth then you need to spend a minimum of 8 months to 1.5 years (based on how many hours you spend daily) and learn all those skills which are in demand currently.
